Overdraft, NSF, and late fees are a hidden bill

A subscription you did not sign up for.

Overdraft is the bank covering a payment you could not. NSF is the bank declining it and often charging you anyway. Late fees arrive from the biller on top. Bankrate’s recent checking surveys put typical overdraft in the mid-$20s and NSF in the mid-teens. Many accounts still charge both.

A federal cap that would have limited many large-bank overdraft fees did not stay in effect. Treat the fee as a product, not a scolding.

This week: turn on low-balance alerts. Ask how to decline paid overdraft coverage if you do not want it. Call once about a refund on a first fee — sometimes yes, once.

This quarter: keep a $50–$100 floor in the checking account you actually use, or move to an account that does not charge these fees. Pair that with the bill calendar so autopay does not hit the empty week.

Fee ranges change by bank. Read your own schedule. This page is education, not a recommendation of a specific bank.
