Paycheck-to-paycheck is often a timing problem

The month can add up and still bounce on Tuesday.

People say paycheck-to-paycheck as if it were a character trait. Often it is a calendar. Rent is due on the 1st. Pay lands on the 5th and the 20th. Insurance drafts mid-month. The month can cover itself on paper and still bounce on a Tuesday.

A monthly budget hides that. It adds January income and January bills and calls the difference “fine.” It does not ask which paycheck has to cover which due date.

Start with three columns: pay dates, bill dates, amounts. Assign each bill to the paycheck that arrives before it is due. The week that goes negative is the leak — not your grocery personality.

If pay is biweekly, the mismatch gets worse: 14-day income walking across 30-day bills. That is a separate guide. If a $400 surprise is what actually breaks the month, that is the buffer guide.

This is general education, not a plan for your accounts. Confirm dates with your own pay stub and bills.
